As you probably saw over at Vogue’s Tumblr, the Met Ball theme and the accompanying exhibition at the Costume Institute is out, and we love its vintage VF connection. Miguel Covarrubias, prominent V.F. cover artist in the 1920s and ’30s, used to illustrate a series of “impossible” pairings across history as a magazine feature—like this fabulous Sigmund Freud-Jean Harlow mash-up, above. It’s in homage to his work that the museum will feature Italian designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. Here’s a portrait of a young Covarrubias in 1925 (below)—we’ll post a few of his best VF covers later, but for a peek now, check out this iconic illustration of 1930s Hollywood at the beach.
